Art is a form of expression.

Visiting an exhibit at a Museum in a city is always a fun thing to do. An appreciation for artwork is something you can develop, even if you're not born with it. Artists tell stories, inspire and evoke emotions. Understanding the message behind a particular art piece is subjective to one's experience. Art has always been there, present throughout our history. Think of prehistoric writings on walls painted by the hand of the people living in caves. They're called artifacts or prehistoric art, decorations with historical interest.

Important art pieces take value with time. This is one fascinating facts about them. Christie's is a British auction house. On November 15 2017, the Salvator Mundi from the high renaissance era was sold at one of their salesroom in New York for $450 million to Saudi Prince Badr bin Abdullah Al Saud. The highest price ever paid for a painting in history !

High profile artwork can be found in luxury homes. For everyday living, there are modest versions or replicas of famous paintings.

In the city of Basel, in Switzerland, Kunstmuseum Basel was the first public museum of art in the world in1661.

The creation of art

In ancient times, most of the art told the stories of dynasties, representing wealth and power. This was done through massive scale and expensive materials. Much of this art has been commissioned by political rulers or religious establishments.

Public museums and art education programs for students in schools made art available to everyone. Museums educate and influence the way art is being perceived by the audience, as studies found. They play an active role in the preservation of artwork in modern society.

An unpopular trend

Aniconism is a general dislike of either all figurative images or religious ones. While iconoclasm is the destruction of art that is disliked for a variety of reasons, including religious ones. We've seen this with the Jews and the Holocaust. A sad time in history, when the Nazi regime in Germany persecuted approximately 11 people, including 6 million Jews, 2 million Roma, 250,000 disabled people and 9,000 homosexual men.

Iconographic art causes controversy. That was the case with some medieval depictions in the 15 and 16th century. Like the Swoon of the Virgin in the Crucifixion of Jesus. Churchmen argued that a fainting Mary was incompatible with how the Gospels describe her standing beneath the cross. Also The Last Judgment by Michelangelo was found to be controversial because of nudity and the pose of Christ that was inappropriate.

Local artists 💕

There are a few artists with great talent in the City of Montreal. This year in May, Nagie held an event called solo at a Mercedez Benz dealer. The pieces displayed were a real feast for the eyes. Showcasing brilliance at a classy venue. It's the kind of art that will not leave you indifferent. Her perspective on life is on point. She has a vast knowledge in all things arts and culture and shares it in her work. The writings on the canvas are her own words. There to covey a message that only the viewer can interpret. It's a form of art that runs deep, highly creative and moving. It breaks the monotony, restores the general idea we have of paintings, it's place in our lives, it's value, where it belongs and who it reaches.

Contemporary artists work in a culturally diverse and technologically advancing world. Their work is centered around human relationships, architecture and world culture. Some favorite contemporary artist-painters from Montreal are :

Artwork in your home

One way to include artwork in your home is by adding objects. Popular items are vases, linen, sculptures, furniture, candles and decor items. There's always an intention and a message behind this. Use them in your space to set the mood, for entertainment, to apply a design style or for psychological or healing purposes. Whatever way you choose, art enjoyment is personal and will bring about a wide spectrum of reactions.
